BARBARA LEFF IS CHOSEN AS "LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR"

July 19, 2000, Phoenix, AZ - State Representative Barbara Leff (R, Dist. 24) has been named 2000 "Legislator of the Year" by the National Republican Legislators Association (NRLA).

Rep. Leff received this recognition for her leadership on critical issues, including the passage of Arizona's landmark HMO Reform bill of 2000. Her legislation makes sweeping changes to the way HMOs treat patients and is considered a model for reform for Congress and other states.

Arizona Governor Jane Dee Hull, a resident of District 24, says, "This award provides well-deserved recognition of the hard work and dedication Barbara has given to the constituents in her district and across the state. The entire Legislature has benefited from her willingness to dig into complex issues and do the background work necessary to find consensus solutions on vital public issues."

In accepting her award, Rep. Barbara Leff says, "It is very gratifying to know that legislators across the country recognize the commitment and hard work that went into creating the HMO legislation. We were very careful to maintain the balance between making sure patients get the care they need and the ability of HMOs to provide a lower cost health care option."

Recipients of the award are chosen by the NRLA Executive Committee, based on nominations from the nation's state legislative leaders. Winners must have clearly demonstrated their leadership capabilities - legislatively, politically and in their communities - and must exhibit the qualities of dedication, conviction, fairness and integrity.

Rep. Barbara Leff is serving her second term representing District 24 in the Arizona House of Representatives. She is the Chairman of the House Commerce Committee and also serves on the Ways & Means and Health Committees. Further information about Rep. Leff can be found online at www.barbaraleff.com.
